Adding SNMP greatly adds to its value proposition. The EMC-1 already has strong support for industrial protocols including MODBUS, and also supports HTTP and LiveView, our local web dashboard filling a unique need with an easy to view a web page that is readable by any device or operating system’s web browser. Why is Morningstar adding SNMP to the Ethernet MeterBus Converter (EMC-1) as a supported protocol? In the Oil & Gas industry where users are engaged in digital oilfield management, SNMP is becoming increasingly popular. Others include industrial users with an existing network infrastructure, who may also employ SNMP as an easy way to gather data from network equipment assets on site. IT system operators and network management professionals in the Telecommunications and Internet Service industries. The roots of the Net-SNMP project are long and a full description can be found on the Net-SNMP history page. Hardaker left the university and realized that the project was now network wide and thus renamed it to Net-SNMP to reflect its distributed development. The package was later abandoned by CMU and Wes Hardaker at UC Davis renamed it to UCD-SNMP and extended it to meet the network management needs of the Electrical Engineering department there. Steve Waldbusser of CMU started a freely available SNMP tool kit in 1992. It is also available from the Net-SNMP web site. It is very widely distributed and comes included with many operating systems including most distributions of Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, and OS X. It was the March 2005 SourceForge Project of the Month. Net-SNMP is housed on SourceForge and is usually in the top 100 projects in the SourceForge ranking system.
